DIY do-it-yourself moss paintings
Plants are an important element in decorating and optimizing the interior space of rooms. Recently, designers in search of new objects for their work are increasingly turning their attention to mosses.
General Information about Moss Live Pictures
In the manufacture of living paintings from moss, there are a number of undoubted advantages. First of all, this is a fresh solution, exotic, and the new always attracts. In addition, most mosses in nature tolerate drought well and do not require frequent watering. Also, most bryophytes have a weak connection with the substrate (mainly attachment), receiving the necessary nutrients for the most part from the air.
An important point is the slow growth rate and “retention” of the composition form for a long time. And the variety of life forms (rugs, pillows, threads, etc.) is a fertile and new tool for a phytodesigner. Especially these properties are important for creating “live” paintings - relatively flat vertical compositions with plants.
There are, of course, disadvantages. This business is too unusual, requires special knowledge, and somehow it is not familiar. Let's try to fill this gap and reveal some secrets.
There are two types of moss patterns: The first is pseudo-living, when dried moss, often tinted, is used. This, in fact, is a kind of one of the areas of pure floristry. We will not touch on this direction of the art of interior decoration. Another direction when using live plants. This is much more complicated, but the resulting effect is amazing.
How to create a live picture of moss with your own hands?
In accordance with the artistic concept and spatial parameters of the composition, the selection of living material takes place:
- for large compositions with a large "depth" of placement of objects, they use spherical tropical mosses (left-handed brimstone gray) or pillow-shaped forms (Dicranums, Ptilium, Gilocomium);
- for small and flat compositions it is better to use unpretentious epiphytes (Hypnum cypress, Mountain Dikranum, Ortrtrichum, Brachycetium). Here you can use ready-made curved branches and roots taken from nature already with mosses;
- for microcompositions and living graffiti it is better to use xerophytic epiphytes (Ceratodon purple, Grimmy, silver brium).
All these species are widespread in Russia and the CIS countries and can be found in almost every forest.
The mosses are fixed in the compositions on a small soil layer (1-4 mm, for large ones up to 8 mm) using ordinary glue, but they are not glued with a continuous strip and point to allow the plants to get through rhizoids (root analogues), to get even limited water and essential nutrients.
Moss Composition Care
A few words about how to care for such living pictures from mosses. For their livelihoods, rare, about 1-2 times a month, watering with a spray bottle is needed. Replace dead plants in a timely manner (experienced professionals create a small supply of material). In necessary cases, plants can be trimmed, especially those that are amniotic and can easily form lateral shoots (Hypnum, Brachycetium, Ptilium). Such compositions from mosses do not require special lighting, since most species can grow in semi-shaded and shaded conditions.
Try to create such living pictures from mosses at home. It will be unusual, it will add style to the interior, it will amaze the guests, and when you create them, you will experience the joy of creativity and the realization of your fantasies and ideas.
